SCHOFIELD BARRACKS

Bob went into the service in February 1940, basic training was at Fort Frances E Warren located near Laramie, Wyoming. He was then transferred to Fort McDonnell in the San Francisco Bay area for more training and four months later embarked on the Mariposa for Hawaii.

Upon arrival in Honolulu he was immediately assigned to Company D, Schofield Barracks. Bob being an experienced truck driver was assigned to teaching other drivers in the Transportation Section. Bob was promoted to Corporal around Christmas time and later made T Sergeant. Bob was stationed at Schofield Barracks, 7 December 1941, when the Japanese attacked.

Shortly thereafter he left by Army Transport and was in Suva, Fiji Islands, while the battle of the Coral Sea was being fought and won. Bob was then transferred to the US Army's 25th Division and sent to Guadalcanal to relieve the First Marine Division.

Guadalcanal was secured in June 1943 and Bob's outfit was sent to New Georgia Island and then he was transferred to the hospital in New Zealand suffering from malaria, malnutrition and a host of other things.

Bob was sent home in 1944 for recovery at Camp Stonemason near Pittsburgh, California and assigned as company dispatcher in the Motor Pool.

Bob and Jane Morgan met at a parade where he was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge and a host of other medals and ribbons for his heroism and efforts in the War. It turned out that Jane was also a Tech Sgt. in the motor pool and they were married 1 September 1945.
